Create a guest room your visitors LOVE to stay in
Have you been ignoring that sense of rising panic knowing that you’ve got guests staying over for the holidays?
Maybe the guest room has been doubling up as your home office and the bed is piled high with folders, books and paperwork.
It’s daunting enough thinking about getting rid of the clutter that’s accumulated in the guest room, let alone how to make the space inviting.
With a little bit of time and some considerate touches you can transform your guest room from ghastly to gorgeous.
Here’s 5 essentials to make your guest’s stay comfortable and welcoming.
1. Clear out the clutter
A guest room full of clutter is not conducive to a good nights sleep. Take this opportunity to properly sort and declutter. If you need some help, check out my Start decluttering today blog post.
If you don’t have the time, then at least pack it all away into cupboards or boxes and move it out of the space. You want to create a minimal space with room to move around without tripping over things.Â
2. Freshen up and clean the guest room
Once the clutter is under control, the next step is to give the place a good clean and open up all the windows to air it out if it’s been shut up for a while.
Treat your guests to good quality sheets and pillows and add a blanket for those chilly nights. I’m loving bamboo sheets. They’re soft, sustainable, naturally breathable and hypo-allergenic.
Decorative cushions are a nice touch to add some interest, but no more than two. If you don’t want them to end up on the floor, provide a basket to store them in.
Don’t forget the importance of smell. I like to use reed diffusers to give a subtle scent to the room. Fresh flowers are even better and will make your guests feel special.
3. Guest room storage essentials
4. Travel essentials for your guests
Here’s a few essentials I prepare for my guests. I love the 3 tiered Raskog trolley from Ikea as an extra spot for some of these essentials.
- A basket of travel toiletries is a great addition for items your guests may have forgotten. I include shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, new toothbrush, hairbands, cotton buds, deodorant and sanitary items. You could also include a spare phone charger and travel adaptor for overseas guests.
- If there’s no fixed mirror in the room, consider getting a table-top vanity mirror.
- Make sure there is a reading lamp next to the bed. Apart from the obvious, this is useful so that guests don’t have to turn out the light at the wall and then stumble over to the bed in the dark.
- Towels. A matching bath towel, hand towel and facecloth.
- If there’s room, a small laundry basket is a nice inclusion.
5. Downtime
